- A big welcome to three new advertisers in the January/February
issue: Sandra Caldwell and Evelyn Yallen, authors
of Sherman Jewellery: The Masterpiece Collection;, the Aberfoyle
Antique Market and Courtland Treasures in Courtland. Welcome
aboard.
- Picton has a new antiques
shop. Owner Kevin
Bazkur has moved his Chatsworth Antiques business,
formerly located in nearby Bloomfield, to 6 Centre Street. The
grand opening was held Dec. 19. Veteran dealer Nancy Binks
is adding her Victorian treasures to the selection offered by
Kevin.
- Schoolhouse Antiques in Havelock
is closed - but just
for the winter months.
- Bob Sullivan, a veteran Quinte-area
farmer/auctioneer, died
Dec. 13 at Kingston General Hospital. He was 76. Bob, who was
18 when he became an auctioneer, retired five years ago. His
son, Boyd, an auctioneer for 29 years, now runs the family auction
business.
- He led by example, not
by words, Boyd told the Belleville
Intelligencer. Dad was very active in fundraising events
... helping out whenever he could. I think the community will
miss him.
- Jackie Jones, co-owner of
the Roadshow 400 antiques market
in Barrie, is launching her second G-Bugs series children's book
this month - Seeing Is Beelieving. Her first book, Sam Meets
Caterpillar Kaleb, won the Quality of Life Omnimedia Best of
2008 book award. Congrats, Jackie. You can read more about the
series at www.g-bugs.com
Robert
"Bob" Long,
widely known as the affable Bob's Good Junk vendor, died Oct.
27 at 73. Bob, a familiar face at auctions, flea markets and
antique malls in the Bowmanville/Orono/Newtonville area, "looked
60, acted 25 and had the energy of a 15-year-old," says
pal Don Gauvreau of Main Thru Church Antique Mall in Orono.
"He was a stand-up guy. The auctions are not the same without
him." Bob, a man of many talents, wrote one of the Wayback
Times book reviews, a piece about
Radios of Canada, by Lloyd Swackhammer. He is missed.
- Veteran auctioneer Rod Williams and his family have closed their
Williams Auction Centre in Campbellford after 30 years in the
business. "It is with mixed emotions that we have made this
decision, but in view of our recent economic climate, we feel
that this is what is necessary to do," Rod says on their
web site. The centre hosted its final sale on Nov. 27. The
family thanks customers and staff. Rod says he will still be
available for on-site auctions and charity events (705-761-5086).
- A big welcome to eight more

and calendars.
- The new Twindmills multi-dealer
antiques and collectibles market
near the Big Apple in Colbourne will celebrating its grand opening

in Perth, Ontario, is a second generation auctioneer with more
than 30 years experience. Welcome aboard, Dan.

Times contributing writer,
has died of complications from Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). She
was 70. Read her obit here
- The Westport Antique Show
and Sale, a Rideau Lakes
Chamber of Commerce fundraising event for 16 years, has come
to an end, organizer Linda Hatfield says in a message
to vendors and the media. The show, which raised over $80,000
since its launch, held its final sale in June. "Tracking
our attendance yearly, we have noticed a consistent 8% per year
decline in attendees since 2002," she says."And 30%
of our valued vendors, for health or economic reasons, are unable
to commit to space in 2009. Additionally, the cost of running
the show and maintaining insurance is becoming prohibitive. While
some of you fared very well over the past couple of years, we
know some of you did not meet your sales targets and cannot economically
justify your booth space. We thank you for your support over
the years and wish you the best of luck in the future."
Deposit cheques for 2009 will be returned this week, she said.
- The Kingston antiquing community is mourning the death of one of its
finest. Byron Brown died of cancer on Sept. 22.
He was 73. The Brockville-born dealer was a mainstay in Kingston
antique circles for 30 years. He appeared at numerous Ontario
antique shows with dealer Nancy Binks, a friend for 40
years. Fellow dealers say Byron was a quiet, but friendly, man
with a great sense of humour and many interests including travel,
antiques, auto racing and anything nautical. "He was a good
and loving friend," says Nancy. He will be missed. Condolences
can be left online at the Irvine
Funeral Home.
- Another Ontario antique show has been hit by jewel thieves. OPP say
an estimated $100,000 worth of antique jewellery was stolen in
an overnight breakin at the September Prince Edward Antique Show
in Picton. "A large assortment of antique jewellery was
stolen from inside Crystal Palace valued at over $100,000,"
says the OPP. Patrons say the jewels were stolen from a vendor
who sells Canadian diamonds. "Observed in the area was a
silver Pontiac Grand Prix." Anyone with information about
this theft is asked to contact Prince Edward OPP or Crime Stoppers
at 1-800-222-TIPS.
